Social media
my thoughts on if one should use it if you are a specific profession
I had an interaction on twitter recently where I said Pastors shouldn’t be on social media. I figured I should clarify. Also, now I am at the point where I will have written two things here, and both will be about religion and Christianity.
In this day and age, where everything is so politicized, I think pastors shouldn’t be on social media!
But you may say hey wait! That’s not fair, or I know someone who is a pastor who is great on social media. That is where there should be some caveats. For example If you are a Pastor that posts pictures of their family or talks about their favourite music or posts random BuzzFeed quizzes that aren’t harmful and are all good.
But we live in a world or society where one member of your church may think the Pope is the Devil, or another says he’s a great thinker, even though you're not a Catholic Parish. You may have a member of your church who thinks reality TV stars would make good leaders or others who think career politicians are better.
The book where Christianity comes from can be used to make all of those options seem like they are the “right” option, but when it comes down to if you are a follower of Jesus, none of that matters, only if you believe.
That’s where I think having social media as a pastor is not a good idea. For example, if your feed is all Trump memes, you as a pastor would scare off all people who are in your church whose faith tells them they think Trump is bad or not Christlike. This same goes for the flip side.
Christ was anti-empire, which makes it clear in my books that a pastor should care about the teachings of Jesus and not get worried about propping up one political ideology or another.
